Frizz promo
Promotion...the work side of being an artist. Ugh.
Y'all seem to have it covered. The only advice I can add is ...
* get Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market
(have it, read it - but it's overwhelming...help!)
* check out Trade Secrets by Meg Hunt
(uber talent blogs about tricks of the trade)
* joining Childrens Illustrators portfolio site
(takes a little dough $$$)
The promotion side of illustration is where I'm stuck. Sketching, painting and creating a web site is one thing but getting the right people there is another. I feel I need more advice about the subject than have anything to offer.
Should I join something like a Childrens Illustrators first? Should I try postcards instead? Do both? I tried to create art specifically for a postcard. It's a scene from a story I've created. It came out something like this...

...but, it seems too bland. There's no story to it. I don't think it make a great first impression - no wow factor. Maybe I should use Bayou Betty (like Dee suggested - use something from your current portfolio)?
Taking that next step is so scary to me. I've got tons on my plate at the moment - how would I even fit in an assignment if I got lucky enough to land one? If I did get one could I really pull it off? What if I'm not good enough? Can I ever get out of my own way and just do it?
Oy, I think I need therapy!!

this is a great piece, frizz.....
Hi Frizz-
Good questions. This is what I think of off the top of my head. The postcard is great. Send it. Get your images out there. Your work is great. Don't try to make it into something it's not because it is completly unique. Send out Bayou Betty on your next mailout.
(try to do a mailout 4 times a year)
You will learn to make time for any assignments that come along. Plus, it takes time to get the assignments so start getting your stuff out now.
I want to join chilidrens illustrators too but don't think it is a must. Do it when time and budget allows.
I get into points where I stress so much I don't send out anything. I think we all do that. But, I believe the key is getting your work out there and improving as you go.
Go Girlie!
hey frizz
you don't need therapy, lol ;-) what you need to do is believe in yourself and reach for the moon and stars! ;-) okay i stole that one, but it's my motto.
your work is cool, keep going =)

Frizz,
You're doing a great job so keep up the brilliant work.
Just take one step at a time and don't force yourself into a mental breakdown!
Patience is key. Do what feels right in the very depths of your being. Sit down and quiet yourself for a few moments and try to listen inward. Clear your thoughts of doubt and see what pops to mind first. If it's postcards, that's your task for now. When you are ready (maybe after you have taken car of this first task) sit down again and see what comes to mind next. it might still be postcards or it might.
Wehn you get that first 'real' assignment. Don't panic straight away. Stop, take a deep breath and tell yourself you can do this. Then tell us and we'll help you through the rest.
We are your family and support to see you succeed and one day we'll all get together to celebrate!
oops, sorry, missed a bit of a sentence there...
(maybe after you have taken care of this first task) then sit down again and see what comes to mind next. It might still be postcards or it might be working on a dummy or somethng entirely different ...
Wow Leezy
I can only back you up on this, nicely said, we're in this together, a family =)
I'm always happy to help any way I can. I'll also appreciate everyone's help in turn lol.
