Old Work

Per this weeks theme, I sifted through my portfolio looking for old work that marked a big change for me. Almost all of the pieces mark some sort of ah-ha moment, something that I had captured and had strength ed my abilities in some way. The piece above is definitely the biggest though. It marks my jump into watercolor. Previous to this, I had been working with colored pencils.

I really liked the details and the vibrant colors but knew that something was lacking . I remembered the fun and freedom I had discovered in school with watercolors and re-created the piece.

I haven't looked back since.

Hiya Courtney

I agree, the watercolor style rocks! It's a wonderful image too, no matter what style. Watercolor is much stronger though, and at the same time draws you more in with it's dreaminess. Okay that sounds cheesy, but I hope you know what I mean =)

I actually like both versions...I'm a sucker for prismacolor. I can't imagine your work without all that lucious watercolor...its really a part of you now.

I love how the perspective is different on the watercolor piece, alongside the vibrancy and boldness of image, the view has much more dimension. Really draws you in and up the steps...

Lovely work - as always!

Astrid, dimensions and angles can really make or break a piece sometimes, right? I've done exercises where I take the same 'scene' and sketch out from different angles to get a better dynamic. Manga books are great for learning how to do this by the way. I have a couple I use for reference. They also show how to address lighting in dramatic ways, too.
