subject matter...and balance

subject matter....I love drawing children...

and apparently dogs too.

As for balance, I don't really have any. I am a full-time teacher. I am a full-time mother of two young children. I have never finished an illustration that I have worked on. Most of my work is done in a single media when I really have wanted to add collage and other media. I never am able to sit down and feel completely committed to creating artwork. I often steal work time while my high school kids are working on their own art. I sit quietly in the back of the room, so I can monitor everyone, and I try to concentrate. At home, I am able to sit down to work no earlier than 9 pm- when my brain is completely uncooperative. I am able to keep myself from feeling too overwhelmed by saying over and over "my time will come". Soon enough my girls will be off doing their own things and I will be left to myself often enough. Some things just have to wait. So balance is not something I am able to accomplish. Hmm...maybe balance is boring. Its more exciting to wait for everything to tip over.

Dear Rebecca

I can only try to imagine how it is to be full-time mother and work and try to get everything under one hat, as we say in Switzerland. Wow.

For as little time as you have, you accomplish a lot illustration-wise, I think! I really like your line work and technique of the top image with the people in front of the houses. The sky seems to be competing a bit with the lower part of the image, otherwise I really like the illustration! It would be interesting to see a version of the image with a different sky (maybe without the swirls, and with less structure?). What's the technique of the lines, ink with watercolor?

Keep up the cool work :-)

Hey maybe the timing is perfect for you after all: Play and doodle in your free minutes creating illustrations in techniques and topics that are fun to you. Then, once your children give you more time, you'll have a big portfolio together, ready to hit the market.

yes- I've been given the same suggestions about the sky before. Its on my list for reworking someday. All my lines are inked in after I do the watercolor parts. Thanks for the encouragement!
