I just want to say, I didn't even think of making this a horizontal 7x10" and saw both Rebecca and Dee made theirs horizontal. I hope I didn't screw up! I guess it is open to interpretation, right?
BTW: Dee posted her process, so I thought 'd let you nkow I have something up too. If you are interested in seeing what brought me to my solution, please go to leezaworks.com/projects.html and click on Rapunzels' icon. Thanks!
she's oh so very plucky! I love your naughty Rapunzel- every detail right down to her striped socks. I also really like your color scheme- those complementary colors make everything pop. I think the inclusion of that strip of orange in the back coner adds to the perspective and brings everything together. I simply love your textures- I've said this before, but it helps to unify all of your illos. I always feel like I'm floundering through styles because I never have enough time to perfect anything. This is perfection, baby. The "naughty story" is wonderful. Very cheeky. I really can't think of anything I would change. She;s lovely.
Leezy- this is brillant! Definatly a portfolio piece (and possible book). I love it! The few things I noticed are: the color of her shirt, i think it should be something other than orange. I kept reading it as part of her hair. I would also make the scissors darker, they get a bit lost in her hands.
I think what grabbed my eye first was the splash of orange hair. (The line of the pigtail helps to draw the eye across the page.) I also really dig the textured appearance (you're getting so good with that!). I agree with Courtney that the shirt and scissors need to be another color...they blend too much. Maybe the scissors could be something that really pops, to stress the significance of them. This is a great piece! I love the turquoise.
Your interpretation is my fav of the group. I love the style and I can feel her attitude in your updated version of Rapunzel. I really like the font style you used for the caption and author, fits perfect. Great stuff - really impressive!
I agree about the shirt color, I think it gets confused with hair. And I like your idea about making the scissors larger, maybe oversized would even be cool?
I want to read the story now. I'd love to see how you'd interpret it this way!!
Oh Leeza, this is too great! There REALLY is a story here, and I'm dying to read it. Such a great concept, and your personal style comes through so brilliantly. I really believe in the potential of this! I want to see a whole dummy!!!! The illustration is gorgeous. The colors are so modern and cool, and work really well together. Her expression is perfect, and the text is bold and tells a bit of a story in itself. I love it!
I will just echo what other folks have said about scissor size and shirt color, but otherwise, brilliant!!!
Leeza I absolutely love your fresh take on this subject. Smashing! Great texture and rough coloring, a perfect match to your interpretation of the story – naughty! Did you create it in real printmaking, or digital? Would love to hear your process.
There's nothing I don't like about this illustration – modern, shocking yet cute colors (fitting again!), great composition, cute character design, wonderful idea, funny expression on her face, nice combination of rough texture and thin line work, very fitting choice of schoolbook font for small text, and good match for the main title text font.
Okay, at first I thought she's standing on a rope in the air instead of the ground. That's the only thing I could mention that may be addressed. But I don't know how? It seems I just didn't look hard enough. Orange sky? Duh.
