Hansel & Gretel

Okay, so here's where I am headed with this piece, trying to get it done for Saturday (HAH! Yeah, right, I hear you laugh) — and I need YOUR help!

Here's my two wee kiddies:

And here's a general overview of what I am aiming at. Color and dimension, not style. The finished piece will be in my scratchy style. It's a double page spread, horizontal with a dye-cut gatefold. (HAH! Yeah, right, I hear you laugh again)

When folded, you only see the moon and trees through the gaps with text above left page: "Just wait, Gretel, until the moon rises, and then we shall see the crumbs of bread which I have strewn about, they will show us our way home again."

When open, the 'thousands' of fat, stuffed birdies are tucked up on branches, hidden in holes and snoozing with the text "When the moon came they set out, but they found no crumbs, for the many thousands of birds which fly about in the woods and fields had picked them all up." I just quickly washed over with watercolor inks to get a sense of mood, lighting and color.

I guess my question is whether I am being too ambitious with the entire concept, or should continue to try to get it done for Saturday's Rutger's Conference. Or — for the sake of a simple portfolio piece — do a single illustration with the kids and maybe a hint of a tree off to the right or something?

Thoughts anyone?

WOW! I'm loving it. If you can manage I say go for it!

The colors really make the mood and I love your character development. I can feel those spooky trees. For some reason I have a hard time with trees...

What a cool idea. It'll knock people's socks off. I can't wait to see the finished piece.

You can do it - keep plugging away!

PS - I had to change my vacation so I'm off next week instead...I'll be back on October 24th!

I'm not an illustrator, but I was an art major and I am a Children's Librarian, now. If I had a version of Hansel and Gretel on my shelves with illustrations like the ones you just described, I'd be over the moon! Go for it!

I am constantly amazed by the lengths you go to stretch yourself! This is an amazing project Leeza! I agree with Frizz, the colors are fantastic and show the glow of the moon in such a great way. I adore the idea of those fat little birdies hiding out behind the trees....I can't wait to see it finished, (and I know you can! Maybe hubby can take baby duty tonight so you can finish up?)and it will be a huge hit at your conference!
(Seeing this is prompting me to get my rear in gear about my own version.yikes!)

okay, it's now 10:40 pm... I am going to have to rethink my strategy here ... my file is already at 711 MB!!!! and I am nowhere near ... maybe I'll do the first page, and print that as a work in progress to show rather than aim for the whole thing. I need to leave at 7am tomorrow morning and I haven't pulled all my stuff together yet - urgh!

sorry I'm too late to give feedback here. How did it go? Did you finish? I think the work in progress already is very promising, as all the others already said. Hope you took it with you :-)

Did you think of having the birds peek out through actual holes in the paper/cardboard? There are so many books out there these days where you can move/pop/touch stuff, this might be a great possibility for your concept too.
