Johanna - what can I say?

What a completely perfect piece. I would not change a single thing. The colors are awesome - Rapunzel pops in the best way. The stars and light shining in the window - makes me tear up. The text is just right.

It's just magical. Bravo.

Johanna- this has just the right touch of darkness and magic. From the glow of her beautiful hair to the soft, dreamy stars-it sets just the right mood. The interior of her round room is perfectly dark and gloomy. Great job!

I am so amazed at the richness of the colors in this Johanna — a true triumph of a piece! What a great angle. I never would've thought of portraying the scene from INSIDE the tower - that's so cool!

I too love the curve of the wall and the swirl of her hair AND the 'roundenss' of the stripes and her dress. The illustration has a continual energy that keeps drawing my eye round and around.

It's very magical — and like Rebecca's piece (which may have something to do wth the colors) — it's very mystical, too.

I sort of feel sorry for her and really feel her loneliness, yet at the same time, it's like there is a glimmer of hope in her expression and for a chick locked up in a dark tower, she certainly doesn't look depressed. She's keeping the faith!

A wonderful portfolio piece, I agree!

I did wonder how it would look, if her hair wasn't cropped off at the foot of the page and that dark shadow enveloped Rapunzel all the way round — but that's just a personal thing.

To everyone:
I am blown away by the quality of the pieces that are posted and can't help feeling that for every one we do: we all improve in some significant way.

GREAT lighting, Johanna, love it! It's wonderful how you gave the hair so much glow. It's as if you put a hidden spotlight on the girl, at the same time you created a dark, somber background without turning the outlook of the image hopeless. The mood of the background is simpliy wonderful, I love how the dim light shines in from the outside in dirty washes, great texture and feeling that you created! The ink hinting the railing, and used on her face is awesome too. Nice dark touch, nice interesting detail how the railing loses itself in the dark around her – eerie! All the while you kept the girl attraction factor, I think, the girl is not desperate, she's cute, has beautiful hair, and is glowing – there must be hope!

The texts go very well with the illustration in my opinion. Beautiful and lettering, I'm jealous :-) I like how you seem to have used one style for the entire lettering, that gives harmony. Nice. Nice decision for the placement too, great balance and harmony with the shape of the text and the shape of the hair at the bottom.

The only thing that I would try to change (only if you can) is that the hair is now just touching the bottom of the page. Is there a reason for that placement? I love the volume of the hair, but at the same time I wonder if the bottom would need more violet darkness. From a balance point of view, I think a bottom is needed for the figure to visually not fall out of the picture.

I also like the quirkyness of it – style of the figure, the ink detail, and the font. Modern touch! Very nice illustration!
