messy sketching..

I admire sketchbooks and sketchers so much. I sketch when I absolutely have to, like when plotting out a dummy, but I don't like it!
I know in my brain, that sketching is crucial for illustrators, and especially important for developing characters and building consistency within a story. So why, why do I despise it so much? I think it's simple..I like paint. I would much rather be holding a paint brush than a pencil, and sometimes it's just hard for me to resist jumping straight into the painty phase.
The surface that I illustrate on is really durable (canvas), so I like to "sketch" and erase on the canvas as I go. I draw with the dip pen and wipe it off with water and sponge until it feels right. Maybe I just like the tactile sensations and the happy accidents that come with this, but sometimes it feels like a weird habit that I just can't break!

sketching in paint is valid too! ehemm...here's a little history lesson: The medium of watercolor was invented because artists needed a faster medium to prepare for oil paintings. Water colors are made for painting sketches! Picasso made over 100 "sketch paintings" in preparation for "Guernica"-he never used a pencil. Van Gogh never sketched very much either. Also William deKooning spent months painting his "Woman I" and he never sketched- he just scraped off countless layers of paint and erased his lines over and over. See? You're like a famous artist!
Becca, this is the exact reason why I loved my art teachers so much. There's so much history we don't know about. :)
I agree that whatever method works for you is the best one!
Wowza, great history lesson Rebecca!I had never heard any of that before..watercolors being invented to do paint sketching? Brilliant!
We need to do a wonder twin - I can fill up a sketch book but then I don't know what to do with them.
I don't think you need to sketch ever. What a fabulous way to capture the "life" of your characters. I get the most frustrated when I love the quality of the line work of a spontanious sketch then something gets lost in translation when I try to paint or do something with it. Maybe I should try it your way?!
