Rapunzel

Once again Courtney - your color combos is great in this piece. Always so vibrant and energetic. Rapunzel cracks me up, is she sleeping is she bored... just passing the time away ... she look slik eshe is meditating and somewhere off in another world, while her hair is really taking on a life of its own! It draws your eye down through the page perfectly, and I like how it's darjker at the end. Which is a really great balance with the inside of her room in that tower. What about one eye open, looking to see if anyone was coming!!!?

Did you use mixed media here? Is that pencil texture in her hair? or a wash on some very textured paper. Anyway, it's very cool and brings it right to the forefront of the image, which makes the piece look very 3-D.

I liked how you wrapped the title around her hair, too, but I wondered if it would read better if it wassn't sitting on the hiar, but maybe just floating a tad up above.

I like the simplicity of the background a lot — and thought perhaps add a bit more shadow or make it a bit darker where the tree foliage meets the tree trunks.

Lovely work Courtney.... I have to admit, I was expecting to see a hidden frog or bug or something hanging on the side of the tower or upside down from her hair .. you know, that Courtney humor, you always do so well!

You always do such a fantastic job with your palette choices! Vibrant and eye-catching...When I first saw it, I said to myself, "How lovely."
I really like Rapunzel's dress-the stripes are a fun touch. Her expression is great...she looks lonely. (Where oh where is my prince?)
I really like the texture and color flow of her hair. (Did you colored pencil here?)It really pops! The line of the hair does a great job filling the composition and drawing the eye from left to right.
The only change I can think of is to maybe move the title up some, as Leeza suggested. It kinda blends with the hair with the position it's in now. Other than that, I think you did a fantastic job with this piece Courtney.

again, your color is so great- the stones around Rapunzel almost make her look like a marquee on Broadway or something. Her body is so prim and proper, but her hair is hanging loose- nice juxtaposition- and the color scheme is all cool except for that hot hair! I love her eye shadow too.
I have a couple of suggestions. To me the trees look really short, making the tower look like it doesn't continue down for a long distance. Maybe you would only see the tree tops...or sky instead of the trunks if the tower was high.
also her arm needs a bit more weight to it- add a more weighted line underneath it to suggest that she is leaning on it- and I assume her elbow would make an indentation on her dress as well.
Very jazzy.

She's great. Her expression makes me laugh, you are so good at that - almost like Paris Hilton stars as Rapunzel. I love the color of her hair. I want to do mine over and make it red/gold too!! The layout is great, your eyes starts left and follows the hair to the title. All around wondeful as always!!

The only thing I can suggest is the title placement. I knew that part of the assignment would be the toughest for me. Who wants to think about fonts and crap?? I really like your font style. I would lower it over the hair and make it bigger and thicker .

I too would love to see a tiny Courtney critter, maybe on the last bit of hair in the lower right corner? But that'a a purely selfish request!!

Love it!

Oh Courtney, this is amazing! Your color choice is as usual, amazing. So bright and intriguing and makes me want to dive right into this story! I love Rapunzel. Her striped dress is really cool, with the high collar and everything, it's really great. I love the text that you used, and it's placement actually really works for me. I think the only thing I might change to make the text pop a bit more, would be to keep a uniform green behind it, and take out the blue.
Lovely, lovely piece! I want to hang it up!

Courtney, I like this illustration a lot! The hair is very playful, almost as if she was in water. Her closed eyes enhance the dreamy mood of the image. I also like how the hair goes over the edges of the paper, emphasizing how long they are, and how free they move – just like the waves, no confinement.
Choosing bright yellow and red was smart I think – there IS the emphasis on the hair, definitely – underlined even more by more your more watery and subtle choice of background colors. This image definitely draws me in, and I would have loved to read the story as a kid!

As for the text, I'm trying to think what could be done... I don't think it's bad, but something seems to leave room for improvement. Maybe placement more to the right instead of close to the middle? Or larger? Or with a different font? I LOVE the painting, and I wonder if the text is not taking away too much attention from it. Maybe a thoroughly modern, straight font would bring out the contrast more of the dreamy, flowing hair? Or a font that's more flowing with the hair, it looks a bit creeping instead of flying?

The image itself is wonderful, and I love the texture of the watercolor, and the strong vibrant coloring of the hair. One thing that might be interesting to try is to add a little more detail to the background? I know it's always hard to know when to stop – less IS more, and I might be wrong. But I would be curious to see what it looks like if the branches from the bottom creep up the wall, maybe small butterflies flying around, or a lady bug somewhere, maybe Rapunzel could hold a brush with detail, maybe a curtain with details in the pattern? It might add to the picture and to the story.

One small thing that would personally bug me a little is the strong blue area in the text. But I can only imagine how difficult watercolor is – I'm too used to the apple-Z option :-)

But I'm mostly being picky (since we all asked for it ;-)) – I love your illustration.
