Oh Frizz, this is such a dynamic cover! And your dragon is such a unique touch. You do a great job keeping the viewer's eyes moving around and around the piece. I think you might want to darken the outline of the castle and dragon some, to make them pop a little more. (I'd love to see the true color version-I know how frustrating that can be.)Other than that, I think you should be extremely pleased with this-a definite portfolio piece.
This reminds me of a cover for a playbill. Full of action and intrigue- it makes you want to see the show. I like your soft colors against the brown of the bears. I do think you might want to change the color of the dragon's fire. Something orangish-yellow that would pop a bit more. The little bear with wings and cowboy boots cracks me up! I love how the princess is looking into the picture of her beloved while the forces of evil (or just mischeif) are at work on her hair. Great piece.
Frizz — what a darling piece! (I really must have you create something for Liv's room for me!)
Well, you continue to surprise me every time you post an illustration. This is adorable, and of course, the characters are animals!
My eye went straight to Rapunzeebear in the middle, then to the title, then I spent a good long while going round the illustration taking in all the attention to detail. Charming!
I think the tower needs a bit more definition, even if it's a tad darker. Right now, and it could be my monitor, it looks a bit soft, almost ghostly. Hard to make out. At first I thought there was a piece of tower missing beside raps' right ear, but then I realized it's the turret at the top. And I agree with Courtney about the dragon's breath, but wonder how an additional color might affect the balance of the piece.
I really like the treatment of the title, I thnk it'svery appropriate for the piece. Maybe the byline could be aired out a bit, which ay mean adding a touch extra pink all round, so the compostion isn't as tight.
Jolly good show Frizz — and if this was a show, i'd go to see it! You should make some puppets, now!
Oh I love this one! It's just the kind of thing I looked for as a kid, lots of interesting tidbits that I could stare at forever..I especially love the bear wearing boots. that is too special! I love how everything moves around the page and is so whimsical and inspired. It's just all so beautiful! (gush* gush!!) I can't really think of what I would change about this piece. I think it works beautifully as is. But I guess if I had to tweak something, it would be to move the framed picture of the prince, and Rapunzel's arms, up a tiny bit. I think that might make the flow even more powerful than it already is!
First... sorry for my very bad english... i'm just a little french :DD... well i discovered Frizz's creations and i love love love her style!!! This illustration is simply wonderful, i love these colors, littles creatures... ++
BTW- I don't know how this barbie color palette came out of me. I'm not a pastel chic. I already have a second colorway in mind and I will work up as soon as I can find some time.
Frizz! What a cool, modern, cute approach! Your pink, peach, pale green and choccolate brown is such a stylish yet sweet choice of colors, love them! The humor of the illustration is also super cool. Bears! With wings? And they talk! And what's with the dragon? An entire story in just one image, very story inspiring! The expression on the upper bear is awesome, cute yet funny. The middle "Rapunzel" bear is good too, but maybe she could show a little more emotion – this evil "angel" is attempting to cut off her hair after all! Oh, but maybe she doesn't know that yet.
The styles and patterns you're using seem to be in great balance: not too much detail, not too little – enough detail to draw you into the picture and make you look, yet still much soothing blank areas with the pink background. I think it's great how you chose brown lines for some areas, like the wings, the faces etc. Without that strong color it would probably be too flat or too sweet. You achieved a cute, modern edge and depth with the lines!
The title font fits perfectly I think: Attention getting, bold, clear message, but it also goes well with the image because it picks up the color of the lines in it, the swirl shapes of the hair, and the quirkyness of the whole illustration.
It seems hard to find something to improve :-) One idea might be to have the hair go over the page at the bottom, to emphasize the length of it. The word "Rapunzel" covers part of it, and I believe it covers some swirls. Maybe if the swirls were in another place and visible, they would add to the picture (repetition of shape). Maybe having the hair going all the way over the bottom, and partially over the sides of the bottom would give the image more bottom weight too. Although I believe you already did that well with the strong brown color and boldness and size of the text.
Great job! Is it for sale? I'm serious, I'd love to hang it on the wall!
