I write, therefore I am

Yes I write! In fact, I find it much easier to write than to illustrate. Sometimes I read children's books and am boggled by the fact that writers usually get paid more than illustrators when it takes 5 minutes to make up a story. Case in point: I could take or leave Mo Williams' illustrations, but his words are amazing! "Going Boneless" is one of my all time favorite expressions. My life is spent making up rhyming songs in order to get my children to do things ("Wake up sleepy head, its time to start the day, Wake up drowsy toes, its morning time, I say!"). My daughter spends a serious amount of time singing my silly songs as if they are as important as Jackson 5 songs (which is the epitomy of coolness in her 4-year-old brain). I swear I have the libretto for an entire children's opera inside my head. I've written a bunch of poems/ rhyming stories that sit in sketchbooks keeping my illustrations nice and cozy. I am never faced with being at a loss for words. My main problem is finding any time whatsoever to do anything with my illustrations let alone my stories. I believe I am the only member of this coven that does not have a web site. I have never once completed an illustration to my complete satisfaction. There just isn't any time to even develop a consistant style over at artipantz central. If only I could have a personal assistant with a microphone recording all of my crazy songs, I would definitely be the 5th member of the Wiggles. Oh...and you should read my lesson plans! They are top notch!

Have you ever considered submitting manuscripts without illustrations for now? Maybe you should...not getting the stories out might be blocking you creatively.
Justmy 2 cents!
I think of Anastasia Suen who started out wanting to be an illustrator but now is a very successful author. Not to say you can't do both...just saying it might be a great way to get submitting!

I'm going to echo what Roz said. If you've got so many fun songs and ideas that they're poring out of you, you should write them down in a collection and start submitting! You may not have the time to sit down and work on your illustration, but you have all of these great words flying around, it only takes a moment to scribble them down on paper. :)
Go, Rebecca, Go!

Rebecca-
Ack. I completed this long post about what an amazing writer you are. Blogger then refused to publish it.

I love your blog entries and I have been fortunate enough to read one of your stories. I agree with Roz. Submit your stories first and then offer to illustrate. I double dog dare you to submit your stories to five publishers by the end of the year.

double dog dare? oh crap. You're on, my friend. I'll sure try. I keep waiting for those publishers to knock at my door (although in my neighborhood, I probably wouldn't open it). Seriously, part of me is embarrassed that I don't have a web site yet- its not professional, but I barely have enough time to watch Project Runway (!) let alone sit down and create a web site. I know this is just an excuse, but it seems like a pretty valid one. You've given me inspiration...double dog inspiration.

I agree with Roz, and think it'd be great if you started submitting your manuscripts to publishers. I envy you being able to find writing so easy - I really struggle and I am the opposite, opting to illustrate rather than write.

Go for it! I think it's better to get them and their energy out there into the universe rather than sit at home in your sketch boo!
