Writer/Illustrator

I wanted to be a writer when I was a little girl. I would spend large portions of my day imagining worlds with supporting characters, intrigue and princesses who flew in bubbles. I sailed through my english classes, always scoring high marks for creativity. (I would hardly ever receive a perfect mark because this was in the dark ages before spell-check, when papers were hand written. My lack of skill with punctuation and spelling was blatantly apparent in those days, marginally less so now)

Then I fell in love with illustrating and devoted 100 percent of myself into the visual world. I still have story ideas and sometimes sketch out something resembling a story. I also make up songs for my daughter much like Rebecca.

It's the completion of the story that gets me. I tend to fall out of love easily and have abandoned a lot of not so great ideas pretty darn quickly. I know that I need to learn to tweak and revise and revise again to polish my words but I would rather draw or read blogs. This is something I will work at as I have been told by several "industry professionals" (imagine that in a deep booming voice) that it will be difficult to match my images with someone else's stories. I think I will also look for writing groups to join because I need all of the encouragement I can get. Anyone know of any?

I'm in awe of Kismet. Look how many of us love to illustrate, but have all of these wonderful writing ideas.
I'm on a thread on yahoo for children's writing, but it's not really a critique group. I know I need to strengthen my writing, (I haven't actively pursued it since high school!)which will require others reading and editing it.
So I guess I'm on the look out for a group as well. There's not a whole lot offered for me locally. If I lived in Austin, I could take advantage of the awesome SCBWI critique groups. Let me know if you find something and vice versa. :)

So, let me ask you this: has anyone of you realized you are part of a writer's group already - HULLOOOO????

Just because we describe ourselves as illustrators doesn't mean we can't critique each other's written work also. The difference being, we set up a private blog that's 'for our eyes only' (Wouldn't want good quality manuscripts up online for any old bugger to get their grubby paws on would we!)

My post to this topic is coming soon, maybe it will help.

BTW: IS there such a thing as triple-dog-dare, growl like a bear - grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Thats' the extent of my rhyming abilities ... ahem ... back to business.

I think working on the writing piece for so long you kinda get sick of it and it seems predictable because, well, you've been going over and over it again. I know when I write something I tend to 'fall out of love' too. Maybe that's why I never thought seriously about my writing.

So I usually write it and put it away for a while before I revist it to revise anything.

I let you girls be the judge if anything I've come up with is decent. I'll post one of my ideas soon. I can't wait to read your ideas too.

Great idea Leezy!!

It's wonderful that we have each other for support, so it made sense to expand the writing critiquing to those who'd be interested within our own group — at least to start off with.

Courtney, I think your text and illustrations together would make you a red-hot commodity because of your wonderful uniqueness. I can imagine your voice shining through words as well as your illustrations - I KNOW you have some fabulous ideas as well as some fantastic stories you have already written. Go!!! Do it!!!!!
